The 2023 Feminist COP Promoting Climate Justice and Gender Equality"
Seychelles, the 2023 Feminist COP convened in Seychelles from October 22nd to 27th 2023. With over 40 participants representing diverse voices, including young women advocates, marginalized communities, and farmers from across Africa, this initiative, under the banner of the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) Project, focused on fostering climate justice and gender equality on the continent.
The central theme of the 2023 Feminist COP was “A Feminist Approach to Just Transition.” This theme underscored the vital importance of inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive strategies in tackling the climate crisis and its profound impacts. Climate change affects women disproportionately, and the conference aimed to address this disparity with a resolute commitment to ensuring a just transition that empowers, protects, and includes everyone.
Throughout the three-day event, participants emphasized the urgency of integrating feminist perspectives into climate action. The vision was clear: a feminist approach to climate justice is integral to building a more sustainable future for Africa and the world. The conference provided a platform for discussions, knowledge sharing, and strategizing to create solutions that would leave no one behind in the pursuit of climate resilience.
The importance of gender justice in climate action cannot be overstated. Women have often been at the forefront of communities affected by climate change and empowering them is not just a choice; it’s a necessity for climate resilience. The conference delegates discussed the need for a #GenderJustTransition, ensuring that women’s rights and empowerment are at the forefront of climate efforts.
One key focus of the conference was the exploration of indigenous knowledge as a precious resource in the fight against climate change. Indigenous knowledge offers sustainable solutions rooted in centuries of wisdom and harmony with the environment. By acknowledging and valuing this knowledge, the conference aimed to further strengthen climate resilience efforts.
The participants, representing a wide array of African women activists for climate justice, stood united and determined to bring about the changes needed to address the pressing climate challenges. The #GenderJustTransition was placed at the forefront of their agenda, recognizing that it is women who are often most affected by the impacts of climate change. The aim was to enable women to take a leading role in curbing climate disasters and fostering resilience.
As the conference came to a close, the message was clear: African women activists for climate justice were unwavering in their demands for COP28. Their voices resonated strongly, advocating for a just transition that prioritizes gender equality and empowers women. Their vision for a sustainable future included a #FeministClimateJustice perspective, ensuring that no one is left behind.
The 2023 Feminist COP emphasized that feminism knows no borders, empowering women to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue their dreams. The message was that when women rise, societies thrive. With a deep commitment to climate justice and gender equality, this conference marked a significant step toward a brighter, more inclusive, and sustainable future for Africa and beyond.
