Championing Climate Justice with People Power in Somalia
On July 28, 2024, Abdilatif Hussein Omar, Founding Director of Action for Environment, with the support of Oxfam Novib, launched a pivotal community consultation and workshop aimed at empowering local communities to take proactive steps in climate action. Abdilatif emphasized the workshop’s main objective: fostering community-driven climate resilience and sustainability. This event brought together powerful voices united for climate justice, concluding with a resolute call to action demanding urgent climate justice for vulnerable communities in Somalia. The consensus was clear: when we stand together, we can drive transformative change.
One of the key highlights was the inclusion of marginalized voices, particularly people with disabilities, in climate discussions. Ismail Qoryoley, an activist for people with disabilities, underscored the unique challenges faced by disabled individuals during climate crises in Somalia. He commended Action for Environment for being the first organization to invite disabled people to raise their voices on climate change. This inclusion aligns perfectly with the core values of the African Activist for Climate Justice (AACJ) program, which prioritizes inclusivity in climate solutions.
Ahmed Absie, a journalist, trainer, and director of the Global Media Initiative, emphasized the crucial role of media in raising awareness about climate change in Somalia. He advocated for responsible reporting and the importance of training journalists to cover environmental issues effectively. This approach ensures that the public is well-informed and that climate issues receive the attention they deserve.
Najmo Khalif Mohamed, Director of the Somali Women Economic and Climate Change Network (SOMWECC), discussed the disproportionate effects of climate change on women, particularly those in rural areas. She highlighted the need for empowering women through leadership roles and providing them access to resources for effective climate action. Her insights shed light on the critical role women play in building resilient communities.
The workshop also featured a panel on “Grassroots Climate Solutions in Somalia,”. The panel included key discussions from Nafisa Abdirahim, Najmo Khalif Mohamed, Ismail Qoryoley, and Ahmed Absie. They explored the impacts and roles of children, women, disabled individuals, and media in climate action.
