Championing Climate Justice with People Power in Somalia
On July 28, 2024, Abdilatif Hussein Omar, Founding Director of Action for Environment, with the support of Oxfam Novib, launched a pivotal community consultation and workshop aimed at empowering local communities to take proactive steps in climate action. Abdilatif emphasized the workshop’s main objective: fostering community-driven climate resilience and sustainability. This event brought together powerful voices united for climate justice, concluding with a resolute call to action demanding urgent climate justice for vulnerable communities in Somalia. The consensus was clear: when we stand together, we can drive transformative change.
One of the key highlights was the inclusion of marginalized voices, particularly people with disabilities, in climate discussions. Ismail Qoryoley, an activist for people with disabilities, underscored the unique challenges faced by disabled individuals during climate crises in Somalia. He commended Action for Environment for being the first organization to invite disabled people to raise their voices on climate change. This inclusion aligns perfectly with the core values of the African Activist for Climate Justice (AACJ) program, which prioritizes inclusivity in climate solutions.
Ahmed Absie, a journalist, trainer, and director of the Global Media Initiative, emphasized the crucial role of media in raising awareness about climate change in Somalia. He advocated for responsible reporting and the importance of training journalists to cover environmental issues effectively. This approach ensures that the public is well-informed and that climate issues receive the attention they deserve.
Najmo Khalif Mohamed, Director of the Somali Women Economic and Climate Change Network (SOMWECC), discussed the disproportionate effects of climate change on women, particularly those in rural areas. She highlighted the need for empowering women through leadership roles and providing them access to resources for effective climate action. Her insights shed light on the critical role women play in building resilient communities.
The workshop also featured a panel on “Grassroots Climate Solutions in Somalia,”. The panel included key discussions from Nafisa Abdirahim, Najmo Khalif Mohamed, Ismail Qoryoley, and Ahmed Absie. They explored the impacts and roles of children, women, disabled individuals, and media in climate action. This session was particularly insightful, emphasizing the necessity of grassroots solutions tailored to the specific needs of local communities.
The Importance of Local Climate Workshops in Somalia
Somalia, a country highly vulnerable to climate change, faces severe impacts such as droughts, floods, and food insecurity. These climate-induced challenges exacerbate existing socio-economic issues, making it crucial to develop community-driven solutions. Workshops like the one organized by Action for Environment and Oxfam Novib are essential for several reasons. They ensure that all voices, including those of marginalized groups, are heard and considered in climate action plans. This inclusivity leads to more comprehensive and effective solutions. Additionally, these workshops leverage the knowledge and experience of local communities to develop tailored solutions that are practical and sustainable. They also provide communities with the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to take charge of their climate resilience efforts. Moreover, fostering partnerships among various stakeholders, including NGOs, media, and community leaders, creates a unified front against climate challenges.
The community consultation and workshop led by Abdilatif Hussein Omar marked a significant step towards empowering local communities in Somalia for climate action. By highlighting the importance of inclusivity and leveraging the strengths of local communities, this initiative sets a precedent for effective climate resilience and sustainability efforts. The collaborative efforts of Action for Environment and Oxfam Novib, with the support of the AACJ program, demonstrate the power of united action in driving transformative change for climate justice. Together, we can build a resilient future for all, ensuring that no voice is left unheard in the fight against climate change.
